What is an LMB Project?

The capstone of every LMB leadership class is a project to benefit the city or local community. The class not only decides what project it wants to do but also completes the entire project as a team. As an example of what goes into a project, the Class of 2007 took on the task of rehabilitating the rather worn out life guard tower at the end of the Manhattan Beach pier and buying a new clock to replace one that had been missing for years. That might sound simple at first, but it proved more complicated than we thought. To accomplish the project, the Class set up the following teams:

Clock Team: The Clock Team researched large building mounted clocks on the internet and then contacted various vendors. It took considerable work to compare  different features from various manufacturers and then present the winning clock to the Class for selection.

Building Team: The Building Team worked with the County of  Log Angeles Maintenance Unit and the County Lifeguards to gain approval for and coordinated the painting and rehabilitation of the building down to the level of getting a new beach bike for the lifeguards to use.

Publicity Team: The PR team did publicity, generated press announcements, worked with the local press, created flyers and managed the "Clock Unveiling Event", attended by City and County dignitaries, at the pier.

Fund Raising Team: The Fund Raising team worked with downtown business owners, found a restaurateur who was willing to turn over his restaurant for a night to LMB, created silent and live auctions, and stage-managed the most successful fund raiser in LMB's history which raised the thousands of dollars necessary to purchase the clock and make other Tower enhancements.

In addition to these committees, Class members made project presentations to the Manhattan Beach City Council, the County Harbor and Beaches Commission, the Downtown Business Association, and the Neptonian Society.

There is a role for you. No matter what you talents or interests, there is a role for you in an LMB project and in the process you will learn how to be an effective member of a team and how to effect change in local government.
