Class of 2007 Project:

Rock the Clock – Restore Historic Beach Landmark

The members of the Class of 2007 have focused their efforts on refurbishing the Manhattan Beach lifeguard pier station, a community landmark which is often depicted in local artwork but is rarely found in recent photographs. The lifeguard pier station, built approximately 23 years ago, is located at the entrance to the Manhattan Beach Pier.

The original lifeguard pier station clock was similar to those found in many schools, whereas the new clock donated by LMB will be a more formal tower clock, illuminated in the evening, and will automatically reset itself after power loss as well as after daylight savings time changes. Local photographer, Mary Pat Dorr stated: “I applaud the recent efforts of Leadership Manhattan Beach for spearheading the project to rejuvenate the tower and replace the clock on the south side & now my clients have no excuse for being late!”

The downtown area, specifically the area encompassing The Strand and the pier, is the showpiece of Manhattan Beach society. Leadership Manhattan Beach has been working closely with L.A. County’s Department of Beaches and Harbors as both want to ensure that the lifeguard pier station, as a symbol of the Manhattan Beach community, is restored to pristine condition. Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe praised the joint effort: “This local historic landmark will soon be restored to its former beauty and on behalf of Los Angeles County, I would like to thank the City of Manhattan Beach and Leadership Manhattan Beach for their efforts.”
